OK, I have heard of these and maybe even smoked the Sherazi in a Hookah, although I couldn't tell anything because of the fruit O.D. that incurred! (For another thread, but....Hookahs? Come on, where's the tobacco?!) Anyhow, I also read about the Rosa but opted out of getting those for some reason....can't recall. Thanks again, can't wait to start getting my garden rolling now! :P

WTF?
US Surgeon General C Everett Koop stated on national television in 1990 that tobacco radiation is probably responsible for 90% of tobacco-related cancer.

Good question whether or not the RYO we're smoking is grown without this crap!? I think one of our members has brought this up not too long ago, can't remember where the thread is though.

Nice link BTW.

All from tekwyzrd's post. The links are all well worth looking into.

tekwyzrd wrote:I'm looking but it looks like the whole industry is in the market for a new testing method. Also, read the second article as well. This is one of the reasons I've been smoking organic. Polonium, radium, uranium, etc. contained in the high phosphate fertilizers used in commercial growing.

There seems to be some contention about phosphate fertilizer's role in the delivery of radiation.

A series of letters to the New England Journal of Medicine discussing the role of radioactivity in causing lung cancer in smokers.

tekwyzrd wrote:I mixed up a batch of tobacco from my home grown air cured leaf. The blend is approximately 70% virginian gold, 8% kentuck burley, 8% scherazi, 8% rosa, and 6% rustica. It can use a bit of time for the flavors to meld thoroughly but based on the cigs I've smoked so far it's a tasty combination. It's very flavorful with a good complexity and just a hint of a peppery bite. It's not harsh but strong and satisfying. I'll definitely mix more of this.

I'm looking forward to this fall so I can start sampling blends using the australian burley and yellow orinoco from last year's crop.

Inspiration strikes - a blend of 3/4 oz the original quoted mixture, 1/4 oz of the same mix toasted, and 1/2 oz NAS organic. The toasted mix gives it an interesting smell that's a bit like coffee and a bit like chocolate. Interesting smell and very smooth smoke.

tekwyzrd, I was going to ask about toasting. Also, have you looked into steaming, pressing or fermenting?

I'll be planting quite a few varieties this year including perique so I'll definitely be looking into fermenting. I'll also be investigating stewing, steaming, and any other process I can find to impart new flavors. I'd like to have a variety of flavors to choose from, flavors created by tobacco and processing without toppings or infusions. The problem I'm anticipating is finding space to grow 14 different varieties. Maybe I'll just pull a Johnny Appleseed.

There's an idea. I don't have any place to grow much baccy around the home but an older lady (a gardener) across the street has lots of room and uses it. Maybe I should get some seeds and just cast them all around here flowers, herbs and such while she's not looking.

This is how the best tobaccos are made imo. Some of the best blends are made using just tobacco and a lot of creativity to come up with condiment leaves. Good luck with the Perique, I ran across an article with a pretty detailed explanation of the process a while back that I might be able to find again, if so I will post it. It's not a recipe per se, but gives a working idea of the process.
